چکیده

The diffusive thermal conductivity of neutrons in dense matter [ρ ∼ (1−8)×10 g cm] of neutron star cores is calculated. The contribution from neutron–neutron and neutron–proton collisions is taken into account. We use the transition probabilities calculated for symmetric dense nucleon matter on the basis of the Dirac– Brueckner approach to the in-medium effects and the Bonn model of bare nucleon–nucleon interaction. The diffusive thermal conductivity of neutrons in the presence of neutron and proton superfluidities is analyzed in a microscopic manner; the effects of superfluidity are shown to be significant. The low temperature behavior of the thermal conductivity appears to be extremely sensitive to the relation between critical temperatures of neutrons and protons. The results are fitted by simple analytic expressions. In combination with the formulae for the electron and muon thermal conductivities, obtained earlier, the present expressions provide a realistic description of the full diffusive thermal conductivity in the neutron star cores for normal and various superfluid phases.

Transport Properties and Neutrino Emissivity of Dense Neutron–star Matter with Localized Protons

(Received February 1, 2008) As pointed out by Kutschera and Wójcik, very low concentration of protons combined with a specific density dependence of effective neutron– proton interaction could lead to a localization of “proton impurities” in neutron medium at densities exceeding four times normal nuclear matter density. We study consequences of the localization of protons for transport processe...

Thermal conductivity of ions in a neutron star envelope

We analyze the thermal conductivity of ions (equivalent to the conductivity of phonons in crystalline matter) in a neutron star envelope. We calculate the ion/phonon thermal conductivity in a crystal of atomic nuclei using variational formalism and performing momentum-space integration by Monte Carlo method. We take into account phonon-phonon and phonon-electron scattering mechanisms and show t...

Quark Color Superconductivity and the Cooling of Compact Stars

The thermal conductivity of the color-flavor locked phase of dense quark matter is calculated. The dominant contribution to the conductivity comes from photons and Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with the breaking of baryon number, both of which are trapped in the quark core. Because of their very large mean free path the conductivity is also very large. The cooling of the quark core arises m...

Impact of Cfl Quark Matter on the Cooling of Compact Stars

The cooling mechanism of compact stars with quark cores in the color-flavor locked phase is discussed. It is argued that the high thermal conductivity of the quark core plays a key role in the stellar cooling. It implies that the cooling time of compact stars with color-flavor locked quark cores is similar to that of ordinary neutron stars, unless the star is almost completely made of color-fla...

A Young Cooling Neutron Star in the Remnant of Supernova 1987A

We describe the cooling theory for isolated neutron stars that are several tens of years old. Their cooling differs greatly from the cooling of older stars that has beenwell studied in the literature. It is sensitive to the physics of the inner stellar crust and even to the thermal conductivity of the stellar core, which is never important at later cooling stages. The absence of observational e...
